Synopsis: Roland is considering buying an old Victorian house. In the house are, his solicitor and the vendor; Roland's wife (who is considering leaving him); her brother; and later the brother's fiancée. In the course of one hectic night and morning, with continual running up and down stairs, these characters try to sort themselves out. All this takes place in a highly ingenious and original setting, in which all the rooms, passages and stairs are on a single level.

Most roles are open aged. If you can act and convince the audience that you are in a three level house while acting it out on just one level - Go For It!!!!!

CAST REQUIRED: 4 Males 2 Females

Elizabeth: Attractive wife in the throes of leaving.
Mark: Elizabeth's brother. Forceful, somewhat pompous, has hers and his own problems.
Tristram: A solicitor's clerk. Young, eager, pleasant. A lovely and demanding part.
Roland: Bucolic, hearty, emotional, hard drinking husband. Loves his wife and his whisky; a demanding role as he becomes inebriated.
Leslie: Small, perky. Wants to sell his house to Roland with as little fuss as possible.
Kitty: The long suffering 'fiancée' of Mark. Rather cumbersome and slow-witted. Few lines but an essential character.

Ayckbourn once described Taking Steps as: "An attic, a lounge, a wife in a quandary and a fiancée in a cupboard, a devious builder, a nervous solicitor, a ponderous personnel officer and a drunken bucket manufacturer all embroiled in a tale of love, confusion and freedom."
