Less than dedicated to his job as an undertaker's clerk, bored with his North Country family background, Billy Fisher takes refuge in his own invented world.  For Billy, an energetic imagination makes life tolerable as he lies his way into and out of every situation, producing any explanation and making any promise that will extricate him from his present predicament, thereby creating every more tortuous entanglements for the immediate future.

Characters (lower middle class background in an industrial town in northern England.

Florence Boothroyd (60+) Alice's mother, in her eighties, finds it impossible to get used to the "modern" way of life.  Talks to herself.

Alice Fisher (40-50) Billy's mother, simple, uncomplicated, a strong woman.
Billy Fisher (19) Youthful, clever, imaginative.
Arthur Crabtree (19) Billy's friend.
Barbara (17-19) Lives in a woman's magazine world, likes oranges (eats them throughout the play).
Rita (17-19) Simple, extrovert, raucously irreverent.
Li z (17-19) Down to earth, warm, generous.
